Carbon County, Wyoming has a rich history representative of the WEST. Main industries are ranching, timber/logging, mining. There are rich, hard coal deposits and many other minerals. Coal is the heritage of Hanna and Medicine Bow, Oil has boosted Baggs, Shirley Basin, Sinclair and other towns. Encampment was founded because of a major copper mine. The Wyoming State Penitentiary is located in Rawlins; an older prison has been turned into a tourist attraction. Every community in Carbon County has an extensive museum which worth visiting. Carbon County is heavily influenced by the presence of the Medicine Bow National Forest. There are countless recreation opportunities for every season.
