In 1887 Gulfport began as the terminus of a railroad linking Jackson, Ms and the maritime trade utilizing the pass at Ship Island. The city was chartered in 1897 and in its first hundred years became the second largest city in Mississippi. Today it remains one of the largest cities in the State and is a busy port, business, and tourism center. It is recovering from hurricane Katrina.
