The Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington Metropolitan Statistical Area comprises thirteen counties: Anoka, Carver, Chisago, Dakota, Hennepin, Isanti, Ramsey, Scott, Sherburne, Washington, and Wright Counties in Minnesota; and Pierce and St. Croix Counties in Wisconsin. It includes all of the Twin Cities region, plus parts of central and east central Minnesota, as well as part of western Wisconsin. When reading and evaluating some articles and statistics about MSAs in Minnesota, it is important to know that Sherburne County had been included in the St. Cloud MSA since 1970, but was assigned to the Minneapolis-St. Paul MSA instead intercensally, that is, after 1990, between official counts by the U.S. Census Bureau.
