Information and resources regarding the Island of Kahoolawe. This island is uninhabited. It was taken over by the US military during World War II and was extensively damaged by military testing and training activities. In 2003 it was returned to the state. It is being administered by the state as a trust for a future Native Hawaiian sovereign entity. Extensive environmental restoration (including removal of unexploded ordnance) is ongoing.
