Fort Meade, the oldest city in Polk County, grew up around a cavalry fort established in 1849 during the Seminole Indian Wars. The early economy evolved around beef cattle, racing ponies, alligators, and phosphate, which was discovered in the area in 1887. Today citrus and phosphate are important industries in this neighborly community located on the Peace River in the southern part of the county.
