Stonington [New London County] was settled in 1649 and named "Souther Towne" by Massachusetts in 1658 and, "Stonington" in 1666 by Connecticut. Its Native American names are "Pawcatuck" and "Mistack". Area, 50.0 sq. miles. Population, est., 16,523. Voting districts, 5. Principal industries, tourism, agriculture, fishing, boat building, oceanographic research and manufacture of machinery, plastic products, castings, electrical parts, textiles, screen printing, boat livery, silvercel batteries, harpsichord manufacturing, extrusion machines, photo processing. Stonington includes the areas known as Pawcatuck and the Borough of Stonington, as well as part of Mystic and Old Mystic.
