The discovery of gold in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada launched the California Gold Rush of 1849. The area includes the mountainous counties of Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, Inyo, Mariposa, Mono, Nevada, Plumas, Sierra and Tuolumne, and the eastern two-thirds of El Dorado and Placer counties.
