Irvine is a large master planned suburban city. It is a fast growing city with development encroaching on orange orchards, pastures and wilderness. On the west it borders Costa Mesa city and John Wayne airport. On the north-west it borders Santa Ana city. On the north there is city of Tustin with U.S. Marine Corps Air Station, closed in July 1999. On the north-east there is a Loma Ridge, part of Santa Ana Mountains range. On the east there is El Toro U.S. Marine Corps Air Station, closed in July 1999, Lake Forest city and Laguna Hills city. On the south-east there is Laguna Beach city. South from Irvine there is a San Jaquin Hills low mountain range with Laguna Coast Wilderness Park and Crystal Cove State Park. On south-west there is a large University of California - Irvine campus, city of Newport Beach and Upper Newport Bay Ecological Preserve into which flows San Diego Creek, which snakes through much of Irvine. There is an extensive set of bike paths developed. The major freeways are 5, 405, 73, 55, 261, 133.
