Burwell Johnson and Oscar Martin chose the name of the town of "Chester" for the Post Office established at Bert Johnson's in 1894, a stage stop and dairy ranch. Burwell (Bert) had been born in Chester, Missouri and Oscar Martin in Chester, Vermont. Edith Martin quotes her father: "Let us keep the name for the town."
Today, residents and visitors alike enjoy boating, fishing, golf, horseback riding, sitting around a campfire, and exploring the wonders of Mount Lassen.
