With a population of more than two million, located in northeast Mexico, Tamaulipas stretches from Tampico to Matamoros on the Gulf of Mexico, and along the US border through Reynosa and Nuevo Laredo. Ciudad Victoria is the capital. The central and western parts of the state are in the mountains of the Sierra Madre Oriental, with arable plains in the north and south. The state's greatest source of wealth is petroleum, but agriculture (sugarcane and cotton) and cattle raising are also important. Maquiladoras, foreign-owned manufacturing plants that finish goods for US export, are growing rapidly throughout the state.
