The Bolognese, developed in Bologna, Italy from bichon stock as a companion dog, is recorded in literature and tapestries of the 11th and 12th centuries and was a favorite among the nobility. Efforts to revive the breed began in the 1970s in both Belgium and Italy. The Bolognese is a small, sturdy dog that is friendly and loyal.
