The Groenendael is a variety of Belgian Shepherd Dog with a long black coat. When the Groenendael was recognized by the AKC in 1912, the breed's name was changed to Belgian Sheepdog. There are three other varieties of Belgian Shepherd Dog: Laekenois, Belgian Malinois, and Belgian Tervuren.
