Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is a complete enterprise wide business solution that attempts to integrate all departments and functions in a company into a single computer system. ERP systems are defined by their breadth of functionality and completeness of coverage of all key business areas for an industry. An ERP system consists of software modules for business areas such as: marketing and sales, field service, product design and development, production and inventory control, procurement, distribution, industrial facilities management, process design and development, manufacturing, quality, human resources, finance and accounting, and information services. Integration between the modules is stressed without the duplication of information. ERP started out as an out growth of MRP II systems, but today also includes other industry/business types such as retail, banking, public sector, utilities and education.
