When Peter Pan flies on stage, that effect is usually being brought about using rigging techniques. The performer wears a harness of some type and his or her "flight" is controlled by means of cables and pulleys. Because of the liability inherent in flying a performer, there are certain theatrical rigging companies which specialize in this type of job.
