The original Murray Greys were a genetic phenomenon. One particular Shorthorn cow when bred with various Aberdeen Angus bulls would always throw a silver (grey) calf instead of the expected "blue roan". Starting in 1905 these animals were saved and through selective breeding the breed was created. The location was southern New South Wales on the Murray River, hence the name Murray Grey.
