Often called "the hillbilly Shakespeare", the legendary Hank Williams, Sr. both epitomized and transcended country music with direct, deeply emotional lyrics sung over spare backing tracks. He died at age 29 on January 1, 1953 after struggling with alcoholism and drug addiction throughout his brief career.
