The Washington Capitals were founded as an NHL expansion team in the 1974-75 season. The team played at the old Capital Centre, later renamed the US Airways Arena, in Landover, Maryland, until moving to the MCI Center in Washington, D.C. The Capitals made it to the Stanley Cup finals only once, and were swept by the Detroit Red Wings.
