John Story, a Doctor of Law and Member of Parliament, was imprisoned for opposing the Bill of Uniformity and again for opposing the Bill of Supremacy. He fled to the Continent, where he became a Spanish subject. Kidnapped in Flanders, he was tried on absurd charges (including allegedly cursing Queen Elizabeth every time he said grace at table), and martyred in 1571.
