Although most known for his leadership in the 16th century Reformation, Luther was also an accomplished musician, especially on the lute and the flute (or recorder). His desire to involve the laity more completely in the liturgy led to creation of a German Mass and to the writing of vernacular hymns. He also called on those he considered more accomplished composers to add to the body of Evangelical German hymnody.
