The British intellectual historian and journalist Paul Johnson has authored 28 books, including The History of Christianity (1976), The History of the Jews (1987), The Intellectuals (1988), and The Birth of the Modern Age (1991). His most famous and controversial work, Modern Times (1983), relates the history of twentieth-century tyrannies, arguing that communist totalitarian regimes defended by left-wing intellectuals are morally indistinguishable from the right-wing regimes they criticize. Johnson lives with his wife, Marigold Hunt, in Bayswater, London.
