Preston is the administrative centre of Lancashire. It lies at the lowest bridging point of the River Ribble. The town was an important cotton port and processing centre. It also played a role in several important aspects of British social history, from the decisive battle of the Second English Civil War to the first stretch of motorway. Preston was granted city status in 2002.
