Bed and breakfasts are generally limited service lodging facilities which:
- Are smaller, owner-operated establishments which emphasize an "at home" feeling
- Tend to be individually decorated
- May be located in the same building as the innkeeper's residence
- Offer breakfast which is usually included in the room rate
- Are sometimes limited in amenities or service hours
This category also includes what are referred to in Cuba as "casas particulares", or private homes. Householders offer for temporary rental part of their dwelling. Meals may be included or available for a small charge. The traveler may have a self-contained suite with a private entrance, or may share common areas with the family.
