Hypertufa is a man-made rock made from various materials bonded together using Portland cement. It is a porous material, which makes it favorable for plant growth, and also renders items made from hypertufa light compared to ones made from concrete or terracotta. Hypertufa containers are popular among alpine gardeners, who have found that troughs made from the materials were a suitable (and less expensive) alternative to troughs hewn from natural stone. Hypertufa is quite variable in its composition, and can be used in various ways, to make containers, rocks, or ornaments. This category presents online resources documenting various recipes for preparing hypertufa, and techniques for its use.
