RSV is the most common cause of respiratory infections in children. Most children are infected with RSV during the first year of life and almost all have been infected by age two. However, immunity is temporary and most people will contract it again as adults. In most healthy infants, the virus causes symptoms resembling those of the common cold, such as fever and runny nose. However, premature or sick babies are at risk of developing more severe complications.
