Cirrhosis is a chronic disease in which the cells of the liver are damaged and replaced by scar tissue. This reduces the liver's ability to process hormones, nutrients, medications and to filter toxins, leading to potentially serious complications. Causes include long-term alcoholism, liver infections like hepatitis, liver injury, reactions to medications, and exposure to toxic substances.
