The pancreas serves two functions:
  • Endocrine: production of insulin and glucagon, necessary for the metabolism of carbohydrates.
  • Exocrine: production of enzymes necessary for the digestion of protein. Disorders of the pancreas involve failure of these enzyme functions and include diabetes, chronic and acute pancreatis, pancreatic acinar atrophy, and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI).
