Sidney Torch (1908-1990) was the child of Russian parents in London. His father shortened the family name from Torchinsky. He began as a pianist whose first professional engagement was accompanying violinist Albert Sandler. Torch then played in theatre orchestras before becoming a theatre organist. After the Second World War, Torch began a new career as composer, arranger, and conductor.
