American 20th century composer Joseph Schwantner (1943-) began his musical life as a rock guitarist. Since that time, he has produced a large body of band and orchestral music, often emphasizing percussion and guitar. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1979 for Aftertones of Infinity.
