German composer Robert Schumann (1810-1856) most fully entered the realm of the Romantic period in his piano compositions, while his symphonies more closely followed the dictates of the Classical era. His courtship of and marriage to Clara Wieck is a famous chapter in musical history, as are his later problems with mental illness, including an attempted suicide and final confinement in an asylum.
