German Baroque composer and organist Samuel Scheidt (1587-1654) studied under Sweelinck and became a major influence on organ composition and technique, especially in northern Germany. He wrote a large amount of church organ and vocal music, including his cantiones sacrae for eight voices. His three volume work Tabulatura nova moved music to staff notation and contained hymns, psalms, chorales and the Mass.
