Russian Twentieth Century composer Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) endured much even as his musical brilliance shone in his compositions. A failed marriage, the Second World War, and Stalinist repression all took their tolls until the end of his days. Yet even in fear or repression, his work could bespeak hope. However, the one most responsible for his dismay, Josef Stalin, died on the same day as did Prokofiev. Thus, as one life overshadowed the other, so did one death. But while few mourn Stalin, the music of Prokofiev carries on.
