Popularly considered Britain's greatest composer, George Frederic Handel (Georg Friedrich Händel, 1685-1759) was born in Germany, studied in Italy, and moved to England in 1710, where he stayed for the rest of his life. He made his name in opera, but when public interest in his work began to wane, he turned to the composition of oratorios. "Messiah", composed in 1741, is his most famous work.
