Twentieth century American composer and pianist William Bolcom (1938-) was a precocious child who began studying composition at the University of Washington at age eleven. He earned his BA in 1958 and completed his doctorate in composition from Stanford University in 1964. Among his many honors was the Pulitzer Prize for music in 1988 for 12 New Etudes for Piano.
