French Classical period composer François-Adrien Boieldieu (1775-1834) helped to move farcical French opéra comique into early romantic opera. In so doing, he partially protected French traditions from the popularity of Rossini's Italian comedies. His Le Calife de Bagdad remained popular, as did La Dame blanche, which drew much of its inspiration from Sir Walter Scott's The Lady of the Lake.
