Walkabout - UK (1971), directed by Nicolas Roeg, from the novel by James Vance Marshall. A man kills himself in the Australian desert, and his small children trek among the Aborigines to safety. With Jenny Agutter and Luc Roeg as the children, and David Gulpilil as the black boy who befriends them.
