The Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars, are presented annually by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to recognize excellence of professionals in the film industry. The award categories represent overall film quality, acting, animation, art direction, cinematography, costume design and make-up, directing, documentary and short film, film and sound editing, score, visual effects, soundtrack, and writing. There are five nominees per category. The Academy also presents five special awards

• Academy Honorary Award - to celebrate motion picture achievements not covered by existing categories;
• Academy Scientific and Technical Award - to recognize significant achievements in the development of technology for motion pictures;
• Gordon E. Sawyer Award - to recognize industry individuals for their technological contributions;
• Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award - to honour an individual's contributions to humanitarian causes;
• Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award - to recognize producers whose bodies of work reflect a consistently high quality.
