An ancient art filled with myth and lore. Dyers use either natural dyes from plant, animal or mineral sources, or synthetic dyes designed for specific fiber types. Many effects can be achieved by various techniques including vat dyeing, dip dyeing, masking with resist on fabric (batik), masking by tying fabric (tie-die or shibori), masking by tying warp or weft (ikat), warp or yarn painting, and variations of these.
