Art Spiegelman (b. 1948) was born in Sweden to Polish Jewish refugees, grew up in New York, and started working in underground comics in the late 1960s. He was a co-founder of Arcade, an influential 1970s anthology, and during the 1980s he and his wife Françoise Mouly edited Raw, which showcased notable experimental cartoonists from America and Europe. Spiegelman is best known for his graphic novel Maus, which depicted his father's experiences during the Holocaust; he won the Pulitzer Prize for Maus in 1992.
